WHEN WINDOWS ARE ACTUALLY WORTH REPLACING
Windows get replaced for three honest reasons: they’ve failed, they’re uncomfortable, or they leak. Everything else is preference, and we’d rather tell you that than sell you a houseful you don’t need.
THE SIGNS THAT MATTER
Condensation or fogging between the panes means the seal has failed and the insulating gas is gone — that window is now doing the job of single glazing and can’t be repaired. Frames that are soft, rotten or out of square. Sashes that stick, won’t stay up, or no longer latch, which is a security issue as much as a comfort one. Obvious draughts with the window shut. And any staining on the wall below the sill, which points at flashing rather than the window itself.
INSTALLATION IS MOST OF IT
A very good window fitted badly performs worse than a mid-range window fitted properly. What determines whether a window leaks in five years is the flashing, the sealing and whether the opening was square and sound to begin with. That’s the part we care most about, and it’s the part that never appears on a brochure.
WINDOW QUESTIONS
Can a foggy window be repaired?
Not meaningfully. Fogging between the panes means the seal has failed and the gas fill has escaped. The insulated unit — or the window — needs replacing.
Do I have to do the whole house at once?
No. Plenty of customers do the worst elevation first, or a few windows a year. We’ll help you prioritise by which ones are actually failing rather than by room.
Will replacement windows cut my energy bills?
They usually help, especially replacing failed or single-glazed units, and the comfort difference near the window is immediate and obvious. We won’t quote you a percentage — it depends on your house, and anyone who does is guessing.
Is there a bad time of year to replace windows?
Not really. Openings are done one at a time and closed the same day, so the house is never left open. Deep winter is less pleasant but perfectly workable.
