WIND DAMAGE HIDES. CATCH IT EARLY.
High winds from thunderstorms, hailstorms, and the tail ends of hurricanes are a leading factor in roof deterioration, and wind-related repairs are one of the top types of roofing repair a homeowner will ever face.
Wind damage rarely looks like damage from the street. A lifted shingle settles back down and looks fine from the street, but the seal underneath is broken, and the next storm gets under it.
WHAT WIND DOES TO A ROOF
- Missing shingles, torn off by high winds
- Lifted and creased shingles with broken seals
- Damage that opens the door to leaks long after the storm
Schedule a roof inspection soon after any storm with high winds. AAA Roofing specializes in wind damage roof repair, hail and storm damage, and the insurance work that often pays for the repair.

HOW WIND ACTUALLY TAKES A ROOF APART
Wind rarely rips a roof off in one dramatic go. What normally happens is quieter and more expensive, because it goes unnoticed.
Asphalt shingles are held down by a strip of adhesive that softens in the sun and bonds each course to the one below. That seal is what makes a roof a continuous surface rather than a stack of loose tabs. When a gust gets under the leading edge, the first thing that breaks is that bond. The shingle drops back down and looks completely normal from the ground — but it is no longer attached. Every subsequent wind lifts it a little more, drives rain underneath it, and works at the nails.
WHERE IT SHOWS UP FIRST
The edges and the ridge take the worst of it. Wind accelerates as it comes over the roof line, so ridge caps, hip lines, rakes and eaves fail before the open field of the roof does. Corners are next. If you’re looking from the ground after a windy night, those are the places worth studying — along with the gutters, where displaced granules collect, and the yard, where blown-off tabs land.
CREASING IS THE ONE PEOPLE MISS
When a shingle folds back on itself in a gust and then lays flat again, it leaves a crease across the mat. The fibreglass reinforcement at that line is broken even though the shingle is still in place and still looks fine. It will fail there eventually, usually during ordinary rain months later, by which time the storm that caused it is long past your carrier’s reporting window. This is the single most common reason wind damage goes unclaimed.
It is also why a proper inspection means someone on the roof looking closely, not someone in the driveway with binoculars.

WIND DAMAGE QUESTIONS
How much wind does it take to damage a roof?
Less than most people expect. Gusts in the 45 to 60 mph range are enough to break the adhesive seal between shingle courses, and once that seal is broken the shingle lifts with every subsequent gust even though it still looks flat from the ground. Illinois sees winds in that range most years.
My shingles look fine from the driveway. Could there still be damage?
Very possibly. The most common wind damage is a broken seal or a crease across the shingle, and neither is visible from the ground. A creased shingle has already lost its structural integrity and will fail at the crease — often months later, during ordinary rain, long after the storm that caused it.
Is wind damage covered by insurance?
Wind damage is commonly covered by homeowner’s policies, though deductibles and specific terms vary. We’ll document what we find and meet your adjuster on site so the estimate reflects the actual condition of the roof. Check your policy for your particular coverage.
How long do I have to file after a windstorm?
Carriers set their own reporting windows and they’re often shorter than people assume. Don’t wait to find out what yours is — if you know a storm came through, get the roof looked at while the window is open. The inspection costs nothing.
What if only part of my roof is damaged?
That’s common with wind, which tends to hit one slope hardest. Partial repair is often the right answer. The complication is matching — shingles weather over time, so a repair on an older roof rarely blends invisibly. We’ll be straight with you about how noticeable it will be before you decide.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. AAA Roofing is licensed, bonded and insured in Illinois, licence #104.015004, and BBB A+ accredited. We’ve been family-owned and working out of Sugar Grove since 1999.
