HAIL DOESN’T ALWAYS LOOK LIKE DAMAGE FROM THE GROUND
That’s what makes hail different from wind. A storm can strip years off a roof without leaving a single obvious sign you can see from the driveway. The shingles are still lying flat, nothing is missing, and the roof looks fine. Meanwhile the protective granule layer has been knocked loose and the mat underneath has started to fail.
By the time it shows up as a leak, the claim window on that storm may already have closed. That’s why a free inspection after a hailstorm is worth the hour.
WHAT HAIL DAMAGE ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE
- Bruising. A soft, dark spot where the impact crushed the mat. You usually have to feel it as much as see it — it gives slightly, like a bruise on fruit.
- Granule loss. Bare black patches where the surface granules were knocked off. The clearest early sign is granules collecting in your gutters and at the bottom of downspouts.
- Cracked or split shingles. Sharp impacts split the shingle outright, which opens a direct path to the decking.
- Dented metal. Check gutters, downspouts, vents, valleys and flashing. Soft metal dents before shingles show damage, so it’s often the first evidence.
- Damaged siding, windows and A/C fins. If hail was hard enough to mark these, it was hard enough to hurt the roof.
WE HANDLE THE INSURANCE SO YOU AVOID THE HASSLE
Hail claims are where homeowners get lost, and it’s the part of this job we’ve been doing longest. We document the damage properly, we file with your carrier, and — this is the part that matters most — we meet your adjuster at your property. An adjuster walking a roof alone sees what they see. When we’re up there with them, everything that was damaged gets counted.
We represent you in that conversation, not your insurance company.
ABOUT THE TWO CHECKS
This surprises almost everyone, so it’s worth explaining up front. On a typical approved claim your insurer doesn’t send one payment. They send two.
The first arrives after the claim is approved and is the value of the work minus depreciation and minus your deductible. The second, the recoverable depreciation, is released after the work is finished and the final invoice is submitted. Nothing has gone wrong if the first check looks smaller than the estimate — that’s how the process is designed to work. We’ll walk you through it.
ABOUT THE TRUCKS THAT SHOW UP AFTER A STORM
After a big hailstorm the Fox Valley fills up with out-of-state crews going door to door. Some are fine. Many collect a deposit, do fast work, and are unreachable when a problem surfaces two winters later.

HAIL & INSURANCE QUESTIONS
How long do I have to file a hail claim?
Most policies require you to report damage within a set window after the storm, and carriers differ. Don’t wait to find out. If you know hail came through, get the roof looked at while the claim window is still open — the inspection is free.
Will filing a hail claim raise my premium?
Hail is generally treated as an act of nature rather than something you caused, and carriers handle those differently from at-fault claims. Your carrier or agent can tell you how your specific policy treats it.
My neighbor got a new roof but my claim was denied. Why?
Damage can vary a lot house to house depending on roof pitch, direction, shingle age and which way the storm tracked. Denials also happen when the damage wasn’t fully documented at inspection. That’s exactly why we meet the adjuster on site.
Should I let a door-knocker on my roof?
Be careful. After a storm this area fills with out-of-state crews. Before anyone gets on your roof or you sign anything, ask where their office is, how long they’ve worked in your county, and for their Illinois licence number. Ours is #104.015004 and we’ve been in Sugar Grove since 1999.
Why is my first insurance check so much smaller than the estimate?
That’s normal. The first payment is the value of the work minus depreciation and minus your deductible. The remaining recoverable depreciation is released after the work is completed and the final invoice goes in. Nothing has gone wrong.
What does the inspection cost?
Nothing. The hail inspection is free and there’s no obligation. If we don’t find damage worth claiming, we’ll tell you that.
